Campeones! Campeones! Real Madrid are champions of Spain for the 32nd time in the club’s illustrious history. Los Blancos clinched the title with a commanding 3-0 victory over Marcelo Bielsa's young and talented Athletic Bilbao. Scorers on the night were Gonzalo Higuain, Mezut Ozil, and Cristiano Ronaldo (again). This is Ronaldo’s 44th La Liga goal of the season, with two more games to play. It seems remarkable that this is a first league title for Mezut Ozil. The fantastic result for Real Madrid overshadowed Lionel Messi’s amazing record set the night before. Messi scored got his ninth hat trick of the season in Barcelona's 4-1 win over Malaga, to take his season tally to 68 goals. This broke the 39-year record of 67 goals Gerd Mueller playing for Bayern Munich in 1972-73. Messi can yet add to his 68 goal tally. He has two La Liga games and the Spanish Cup Final to play. The Copa del Rey between Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao will be played on the 25 May 2012. The three goals gives Messi 46 La Liga goals for the season and he is now well placed to finish La Liga’s top scorer, although Ronaldo probably has other ideas with 44 goals. Leo Messi became the first player in over 80 years to score 45+ league goals in one season in one of Europe's top leagues. Everton's Dixie Dean was the last to do it in 1931-32, netting 45 goals. Messi has made breaking records his part-time hobby this season.
